Special Interest Day - Jazz
Sandy Burnett

Jazz is one of music’s most important genres: a fascinating blend of rigorous structure, free-wheeling creativity, close-knit ensembles and imaginative improvisation. Drawing on his experience both as musicologist and gigging musician, Sandy can shed light on jazz from the inside. His talk covers the early years of jazz up to the Second World War, and touches on the disparate influences which lay behind the emergence of jazz. Musical illustrations range from the blues, ragtime and the very first jazz recordings through to classics by Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the dawn of the Swing Era.

10am - 3pm £ lectures and a delicious 2 course lunch. Cost £45

Contact Jane Wright to book by emailing boughurst@yahoo.co.uk

Release your inner cartoonist
Harry Venning

RELEASE YOUR INNER CARTOONIST

Special interest day: Thursday 2 November

ARCA Hall (Free Parking)

10.30-3.00

Including Morning Refreshments and Buffet Lunch

THE MAN: HARRY VENNING

Harry Venning is a cartoonist, comedy writer and performer based in Brighton. His cartoons have appeared in publications as diverse as Mathematics Today, Radio Times, Music Teacher and The Stage. For 25 years he provided The Guardian with the weekly strip cartoon Clare In The Community, about an unaware and empathy free social worker. In 2004 he developed Clare In The Community into a successful BBC Radio 4 sitcom starring Sally Philipps which ran for twelve series.

Harry is an accredited lecturer with the Arts Society, an Honorary Fellow of the English &  Creative Writing departments of Aberystwyth University, resident cartoonist with the Blue Hat team building organisation, winner of a Sony Radio Award for Comedy and a former UK Strip Cartoonist of The Year. He cannot draw hands or horses.

THE DAY

We are very pleased to welcome back Harry for what promises to be a wonderful day. We’ll begin with refreshments, and then Harry will talk about the history of cartoons, cartoonists and their differing styles He will also explore various aspects of the cartoonist’s life – rejection, professional envy, plagiarism, artist’s block, deadlines - as revealed by cartoonists themselves through their cartoons. Predominantly lighthearted, the presentation will also touch on more serious topics, such as political censorship and the Charlie Hebdo murders.

After a delicious buffet lunch, it’s YOUR TURN!! Harry will give us a workshop. He’ll show us cartoon tricks, techniques, and shortcuts. We will discover our visual sense of humour, our comic creativity, our storytelling.  Maybe you’ll discover skills you never knew you had, and even if you don’t, you’ll still have a fun time!

ARTISTIC ABILITY IS NOT ESSENTIAL, OR EVEN NECESSARY

Harry will be drawing along on his flipchart and giving copious amounts of praise and encouragement. He’ll hope to get us all to create a 3-4 frame strip cartoon. Something to put on your mantelpiece (or hang in the smallest room?)

Should anyone not want to engage as a participant, but nevertheless want to be present as an observer, they are equally welcome.

Report from Special Interest Day 4th November '21
Dr Irving Finkel

Were Ancient People Like Their Modern Descendants?

After a year’s enforced delay, The Arts Society Canterbury was finally able to enjoy a Special Interest Day
exploring the art and thinking of the Ancient World under the expert guidance of British Museum
Curator, Dr Irving Finkel.

In his first lecture, Dr Finkel explained the rules and strategy of the Royal Game of Ur (also known as the Game of Twenty Squares), showing illustrations of intricate game boards that have been discovered in the Royal Cemetery at Ur, and elsewhere.

The second lecture was a fascinating tale of the reconstruction of a coracle shaped Ark which pre-dated Noah.

After lunch, all participants had a practical session in writing their name in cuneiform on clay tablets.  The whole day was most illuminating.

After a career in hospital medicine, rural and clinical practice, medical management and research, Dr James Grant has now turned his lifelong interest in history and art into a new departure as a lecturer for The Arts Society.

During this Study Day, James will be offering us his expertise on different aspects of art and medicine over the centuries.

We will learn how artists and illustrators perceived physicians and the practice of their profession, how they responded to plague and pestilence and how personal illness can affect an artist's own creativity. The day will end with a session in which James will be showing us some of his collection of medical antiques. We will try and guess their uses helped by the artistic clues provided.

Formed in Fire – 20th Glass and Ceramics
Mark Hill

This event was well attended and much enjoyed - click here for the report of the day: http://theartssocietycanterbury.org.uk/News/News.aspx

****

Mark has worked with antiques and collectables since leaving university, but credits his interest in the subject to a childhood fascination with an unlikely trio: Bagpuss, Lovejoy, and the Antiques Roadshow!

(Bagpuss of course is the brain child of our local Canterbury artist Peter Firmin.)

Mark began his career as a porter and then a specialist at Bonhams before moving to the Collectors Department at Sotheby’s, where he handled an enormous range of 18th, 19th and 20th century objects from toys to scientific and photographic equipment, vintage fashion and even bonsai trees. He then became a Director of an antiques and collectables website.

Since 2001, Mark has been the 'Collectables and 20th Century Design' specialist for an international series of books and he has also published books on Medina glass, Dartington glass, West German Ceramics and Czech glass design. He is an avid collector of 20th century glass and 19th century writing instruments.

Each attendee on the Study Day can bring an article from the 20th century to be valued.

Heritage Open Day at Bekesbourne Church
local members

On Saturday, September 9th, 2017 St Peter’s, Bekesbourne, was open from 10am to 4pm as part of the Heritage Open Days festival of history and culture – see https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk for other local events.

This was an opportunity to explore the church and its tranquil churchyard with the help of the CFDAS church recorders who created the Bekesbourne Church Record. On display also were photographs from the extensive village archive including a set of images of weddings at the church through the ages illustrating how the costumes and practices have changed. The earliest wedding photograph dates from 1893.

The bells rang out and there was a chance for all ‘to have a go’.
